Peter Parker is the son of Richard and Mary Parker. His parents
were undercover agents for the agency known as S.H.I.E.L.D. However, they were killed on one
of their missions. Richard's brother, Ben (along with his wife May) helped to raise Peter. Peter
was an excellent student and excelled in school. May and Ben were not rich and had to scrape
together enough money to get Peter a microscope. Peter was a very shy boy and was often picked on by Flash Thompson (the star quarterback at Midtown High). Thompson often called
him "Puny Parker".
One day Peter was attending a science experiment. A tiny spider was
accidentally exposed to radiation. It bit Peter before it died. Peter felt strange after the bite and
was almost hit by a car. However, he felt a strange sensation and was able to jump and cling to a
nearby building. Peter soon designed a pair of web shooters and a flashy costume. He set out in
the entertainment world as the Amazing Spider-Man. Peter's ego swelled as his success
continued to rise. One night a thief ran by him and he did nothing to stop him. Peter returned
home to learn that his Uncle Ben was killed by a burglar. Peter went out as Spider-Man to find
the burglar. When he caught him he discovered it was the same man he had let go earlier. It was
at this time that Peter learned "With great power comes great responsibility".
A lot has
happened to Peter since that spider bit him. He went to college at E.S.U. and fell in love with
Gwen Stacey. She was later killed by Norman Osborn. Peter and Flash actually became good friends, and Peter eventually married Mary Jane Watson. He also had to witness the death of his best friend Harry Osborn who was killed by the experimental Goblin formula. However, one of
Peter's most difficult times came when his "parents" came back. They were actually androids
built by the Chameleon to learn Spider-Man's secret identity. This helped to put Peter over the
edge. He began to withdraw from his life. He wanted to live only as "The Spider". Peter's Aunt
May had a stroke at this same time, and his clone returned. Ben Reilly and Mary Jane helped
bring Peter back from the edge. However, Peter then learned that he was the clone. He actually sided with the Jackal before he realized he was just as much as a human as anyone else.
Peter has gone through a lot. He learned that Norman Osborn was alive and that Ben was
really the clone. Norman has to be Peter's greatest enemy. He was able to frame Spider-Man
causing the whole Identity Crisis storyline. Peter was eventually able to clear himself, once
again become Spider-Man, and he defeated Osborn. However, we don't know if that was the last
we will see of the Green Goblin.
